Laws & Licensing
Exams
To practice any surveying discipline as a licensed professional, an individual must pass a “minimum standards” exam. This exam is administered through the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), accompanied by a period of internship working with a Licensed Professional Surveyor.
Since the state laws regarding the practice of surveying can vary from state to state, each state has its specific requirements for licensure.
Although requirements may be similar, individuals must be licensed in each state where they intend to practice.
A community college or university education consisting of an associate degree or bachelor’s degree in land surveying will provide valuable knowledge needed to begin a successful career in surveying.
License Requirements
To work as a Professional Surveyor in any state, you must be licensed by the state’s licensing board. To learn more about obtaining a surveyor’s license in respective states, visit the NCEES website.
